MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR MEHDI SAHAB at Ghalib Academy, New Delhi

Vinod Mubayi

The memorial service on January 14, 2015 was both a poignant and a deeply moving evening.

His passing meant a passing of an entire culture that some of us had grown up and imbibed all our lives. It was implicit in what he and his wife narrated in the brief 20 minute video from Mamujaan ki Diary that introduced the evening and in what all the speakers, whether close relatives describing various personal episodes or intellectual and political comrades, said. Even the tributes that were paid to him acknowledged the fact of departure, not only in its generational aspect but more in the sense of mourning a loss of social and cultural mooring.

Today’s India is an alien landscape but while admitting this we still have to keep moving on: “dam hai to mudava-e-alam karte rahenge.”
