I knew Obaid quite well when he was at TIFR in Bombay and I was there too. I also used to meet his wife Asiya from time to time. His intellectual accomplishments in molecular biology are well known and is the subject of the obits we are carrying.
There is a story related to me by late Prof. K.A. Naqvi when Obaid was jailed briefly in later 1940s for his Communist activities, some high level people on the left-liberal side of Congress approached Nehru for his release as they said he was a brilliant student and Nehru agreed to it. We would talk about several things and sometimes played tennis together but he was not keen to enter discussions about party, Naxalism, etc.
